Raising Demons, by Shirley Jackson

In the long-out-of-print sequel to Life Among the Savages, Jackson's four children have grown from savages into full-fledged demons.

After bursting the seams of their first house, Jackson's clan moves into a larger home. Of course the chaos simply moves with them. A confrontation with the IRS, Little League, trumpet lessons, and enough clutter to bury her alive - Jackson spins them all into an indelible reminder that every bit as thrilling as a murderous family in a haunted house is a happy family in a new home.

The Eisenhower Years and All Those Dears--With Attitude!
By Allen Smalling
Reviewer's Note: After many years out of print, RAISING DEMONS has re-joined LIFE AMONG THE SAVAGES, Shirley Jackson's two wonderful and piquant memoirs of life with children in small-town New England.
.
RAISING DEMONS is the second and last of mystery writer Shirley Jackson's autobiographical accounts of her life as a small-town mommy in bucolic Bennington, Vermont in the Baby Boomer Fifties. Although many of the chapters in this book were originally published as short stories in various women's magazines and the NEW YORKER, in final form together the work functions as a good chronological novel set in the "Together-ness" mid-fifties.

But if the prospective reader thinks that Shirley Jackson's acceptance of the roles of Housewife, Mother of Four and Faculty Wife doomed her to an empty-headed vacuity, think again: there's a universe of verbal subversion going on in her mind and on these pages.

At the time RAISING DEMONS opens little Barry, with the remarkably flexible nomenclature characteristic of this family now called "Mr. Beekman," is headed firmly toward toddlerhood and the older children (counting upwards Sally, Jannie, and elder son Laurie) are all spaced conveniently three years apart. And that, to hear her tell it, may be just about the only orderly domestic act Mrs. Stanley Hyman, the social and familial name for Our Heroine Shirley Jackson, saw to conclusion. Not that her children were outrageously disruptive or combative (but perhaps a bit more than other people's kids, she worries) -- but they certainly had their own ways of talking and thinking.

Laurie fell in love with jazz and jivester slang, to the point where his father started fining him for that "oleaginous jargon" as though terms like "real cool" were real obscenity. Jannie's take on logic was to enter a house filled with toxic gas from a dead, antique refrigerator and when her mother confronted her with "That sign says DO NOT ENTER," countered with "I didn't think you meant me." (And I thought that trait only emerged in adolescence!) Sally so desperately wanted to help Laurie find a critical gym shoe for his basketball game that she ignored Dad's edict not to perform white magic:
" 'Laurie's shoe is weaker and creaker and cleaker and breaker and fleaker and greaker . . .' Sally wound through the study, eyes shut, chanting. Barry came behind her, doing an odd little two-step. . . 'Now wait a minute here,' my husband began. . . . 'We're just untending,' Barry explained reassuringly."

Quite often Shirley graciously consents to make herself the butt of the humor--and then, like a good mystery writer, offers a twist ending as she barbs her way out. When her husband joins the faculty at Bennington College, watch how la Jackson confesses mixed feelings about hubby's (all-girl) students as she breaks dams of faint praise: "I never saw any student, of whatever year, kick a sick cat. They were, as I say, neat, well-mannered, and demure. Their clothes were subdued, sometimes so much as to be invisible. . . "

As with LIFE AMONG THE SAVAGES, even the most trivial of domestic upsets turn, in Jackson's high prowess, into high drama. And RAISING DEMONS is consistently funny and consistently filled with a wide variety of humor: sitcom-but-twisty outcomes, barbed repartee, and perhaps best of all the legendary Shirley Jackson revelations of the occult on brilliant display, here a kind of mythical kiddie-occult that at times out-Tolkiens Tolkien. All from their own little minds, too, which makes it all the more endearing and frightening. I know Modern Moms who have read RAISING DEMONS and love it for its pinpoint accuracy of family life, archaic references to dry-clutch automobiles and afternoon newspapers notwithstanding.

(this graf is new for 2016): Unlike the steady-selling LIFE AMONG THE SAVAGES, Jackson's RAISING DEMONS has tended to slip in and out of print in recent times (I don't know why). Until recently all we had new was a two-in-one edition of LIFE AMONG THE SAVAGES and RAISING DEMONS put together by the Quality Paperback Book Club people, which has now become a little hard to find. In 2015, the situation changed for the much-better when a new trade paperback edition of DEMONS was released, to match an earlier re-release of SAVAGES. I'm not crazy about these new editions' cover art but who cares -- both books are available new, and that's a blessing.

My All-Time Favorite
By Jayne S
I received "Raising Demons" as a gift from my teacher in 8th grade (1972) and have read it hundreds of times. I even named my children after the children in the book and find that all-too-often my life as a busy mother parallels Ms. Jackson's, even though the book takes place decades ago. The children are realistically eccentric, the relationships true, the pets demanding, and the house... well, anyone who has ever bought an old house will surely recognize the situations found here.

More about the Jackson family
By L O'connor
This is the sequel to 'Life among the savages', which describes the trials and tribulations of raising four children. Here we have more about the Jackson children as they grow older and more complex. Shirely jackson is wonderful at describing the weird behaviour of children, and the sometimes even weirder behaviour of adults. There's a wonderful description of the tensions that occur between mothers while watching a Little League baseball match in which her older son is playing, and a very funny account of a trip to New York, where her daughter Sally has her own unique view of the Empire State Building. Shirely Jackson describes the ups and downs of family life with great humour and a complete lack of sentimentality. She is very sound on the subject of husbands. Writing about the trials of being a faculty wife, she says "naturally a husband presents enormour irritations no matter what he is doing" (how could anyone argue with that?) Whether she is writing about a dangerous refrigerator, a daughter who does magic, or a husband judging a beauty contest, she is always very entertaining and very funny.

Open Your Mind to Prosperity, by Catherine Ponder

"This is another of Ponder's classics. It is divided into Part 1: Basic Methods for Demonstrating Prosperity and Part 2: Other Ways of Demonstrating Prosperity. I suppose by now nothing is new as many other metaphysical writers have explained these same techniques, but Ponder has a uniquely inspired style and her writings have the capacity for immediately lifting one up out of despondency. I especially loved the following thought from Chapter 9: "There are those people who read self-help books and take numerous success courses, who get the idea that mind power is all there is; that if they just use mind power sufficiently, everything will come their way ... the time usually comes, though, when they realize that [that] is not enough, and they begin to "spin their wheels" spiritually." I agree with her that practicing the love concept will do more to help one achieve your goals than all the hard mental effort in the world. There is one thing I do not agree with, and that is the dogmatic concept of "tithing" since this idea has been very much abused by organised religion. I do not believe that giving should be prescribed in percentages and here I concur with other great metaphysicians like Dr Joseph Murphy that exact percentages are less important than the spirit of giving. Perhaps the best chapter in this book is the explanation of "divine restoration" which, if practiced, will help more people than all the anti-depressant medication in the world. I salute Catherine Ponder as one of the greatest writers of the 20th century, and may her work continue to help and inspire as many people as possible to experience abundance and fulfilment in their lives."

Great book!
By P. Bowens
You know that saying about " don't judge a book by its cover". Well, that goes for this book too. When I received the book it was shipped to me quickly and it just looked like a simple library book. BUT, when I began to read it, I was very impressed. So impressed that I decided to actually read it like a text book and I began to take notes. It helped me to examine my thoughts and intentions regarding prosperity and not just monetary prosperity. Yes, I would recommend this book, even in spite of many bible references. So, if that is an issue for you....here's my warning, lol. I have recommended it to several friends.

Welcome Great Wellbeing and Prosperity into your life.
By Jusuf Hariman
This is the most enlightening book on how to prosper I have ever read. The basic idea is that you are not trying to make God give you anything. You are only opening your mind to receive the abundance God has promised you from the beginning. Another intriguing aspect of this book is that the techniques can be used equally well to prosper others. Picturing a loved one's good, or affirming it through the spoken wsord, can have tremendous effects. Ponder teaches that there are 3 steps to prosperity: (a). Once you get definite about what you want, and write it down, the universe or God can be definite about what you want; (b). Create a picture of your goal as clearly as possible and look and enjoy it everyday. These images will be absorbed by your subconscious mind and begin to shape your reality; (c). Use prosperity affirmations often. Statements broadcast into the universe attract a certain reality, and in time are expressed as fact. Finally be prepare that flowers bloom when they are ready, and not before.

Great Book!
By April Givens
Following the principles of this book definitely opens your eyes to the possibilities that can occur in your life. I've found that saying affirmations, writing them down and doing the work definitely helps to get what you want. God wants us to live a prosperous life and reading this book affirms it. The author, Cathy Ponder, explains that we must be specific as to what we desire, as long as it is in the realm of God's principles. My favorite quote in the book is, "I cannot lose my good. I have not lost my good, though I may have outgrown certain phases of it. My good has simply changed form." That quote gives reassurance to the ones who may have thought they had lost what God had for their lives. This is a book of love and hope.

Other adoptees are not that fortunate. I don't want to spoil the read for ...
By StacyM
As an adoptee in search myself, I read whatever I can about the searches of others. This book is important because it shows the hoops one must go through, the grace that is sometimes bestowed and the hurdles one must jump. Searching for truth can be exhausting. The author has searched for a long, long time. People came into his life who understood his journey and helped in various ways. Other adoptees are not that fortunate. I don't want to spoil the read for anyone by saying too much. If you are interested in real life mystery and suspense regarding adoption and reunion, this book will provide.

An interesting read about a man searching for answers on ...
By Chelsea Cromar
An interesting read about a man searching for answers on who his biological father is. Being Canadian the backstory on how he found his mother and who she suggests his father is, is quite intriguing. It will be interesting to see what comes of this book. All facts and suggestions point to William Shatner as the father. Getting him to take a DNA test would just seal the deal.

Foucault, Subjectivity, and Identity: Historical Constructions of Subject and Self, by Robert Strozier

Although the writings of Foucault have had tremendous impact on contemporary thinking about subjectivity, notions of the subject have a considerable history. In Foucault, Subjectivity and Identity Robert Strozier examines ideas of subject and self that have developed throughout western thought. He expands Foucault's idea of the subject as historically determined into a wide-ranging treatment of ideas of subjectivity, extending from those expressed by the ancient Sophists to notions of the subject at the end of the twentieth century.

Strozier examines these traditions against the background of Foucault's work, especially Foucault's later writings on the history of self-relation and the subject and his idea of historical subjectivity in general. Strozier explores various periods of western thought, notably the Hellenistic era, the early Italian Renaissance, and the seventeenth century, to show that almost every treatment of subjectivity is related to the Sophist idea of the originating Subject.

Drawing on a wide spectrum of writings-by Epicurus and Seneca, Petrach and Montaigne, Dickens and Conrad, Freud and Judith Butler-Strozier analyzes particular historical moments during which subjectivity becomes a crucial issue, or when a particular construction of the subject is established. He shows that these moments are important both to western thought about the subject and to what we are as subjects at the present time.

Strozier's book brings literature, literary theory, history, and philosophy into close relation. It opens a new phase of the debate about subjectivity that will prove stimulating reading for scholars in these fields.

How To Look Like Tarzan, Play Like Tarzan-And Win Like TarzanHeadline:What It Takes to Stack the Strength-Deck in Your Favor If football were played in the weight room or on the track, I could guarantee that each year, the team that won the championship would NOT be the team that won on the field of play. And that is absolutely true in every sport and every game. It's a rare track meet that you don't hear someone rhapsodize about training numbers and then see him or her lose badly. In football, we have a phrase for this: 'Looks like Tarzan, plays like Jane.' Pavel and my goal in writing this book is to clarify the role and impact of strength training in fitness, sports, and life. We are committed to clarity, even though at times, it's impossible to navigate the sea of conflicting information regarding the lifting sports. Pavel's experience and research provides grounding and a confidence to Do this! as we often joke. What can you expect from reading this book?. You will learn some history. You will discover that almost everything discussed in the fitness industry has been done before-and often better.. You will reexamine the role of strength training as it applies to sport. Doing so may serve as the greatest timesaver in history!. You will find that, like a medical doctor, a strength coach must be committed above all to Do no harm-a pledge that's often disregarded.. You will be exposed to the concept of systematic education and the need to build an athlete (or anyone!) using some kind of intelligent approach.. You will be exposed to another educational system-along with a way to harness its powers-that will give you clarity into all the various fitness, health, and nutritional information being tossed at you daily.. You will discover the tools for teaching an entire team to improve in a sport-and why these great tools may be of no value to you in your training!. You will be exposed to what the best in sports do in the weight

Writing rambles and weaves, but the programs are really effective
By Dunte H.
Easy Strength could benefit a lot from just saying less.

The entire premise of the Easy Strength style of training is to do only what is essential to improve your strength and general fitness while devoting the majority of your time to improving in your chosen sport. The programs that John and Tsatsouline present are truly effective and backed up by some old-news physiology research that is VERY true, even now. However, they ramble and weave and dodge around the point for so long in the beginning, that it is difficult to stay committed to the story long enough to get to that content.

I understand from the foreword that the book was essentially a transcript of a strength & conditioning conversation between the authors, but that doesn't make for easy reading. While every story, every side note, and every bad joke is loosely connected to the topic, the whole book could stand to be condensed.

OR they could present the programs right away with a challenge: Read on to understand why this is so potent. I would give the book 3 stars for being a little irritating to read if the programs were not so spot-on: I have improved my strict pull-up count and 5min kettlebell snatch in just a few weeks of the basic Easy Strength program. Now I'm moving to Even Easier Strength and already know what kind of gains to expect.

Short version: the programs are so good and work so well, that you should absolutely get a copy, relax your nagging doubts, and build some strength, but you should probably borrow that copy from a friend and take notes on the programs because you won't want to dig through this thing again to find the treasure.

Not up to usual standard
By WPJ
I have a couple of Dan John publications; unfortunately this is the most disappointing. I still don't know how to 'do' easy strength - there is nothing more in here than is what is published in the articles already written on it, and readily available on the net or in Dan's earlier books. Similarly, the general strength work out is, almost word for word, a re-hash of what is on T-Nation and/or in is 'Mass made simple' book. As for Pavel's contribution -a lot of it seems like advertisements for his other publications. I assume that if you already own those, you will probably also find a lot of re-hashing.
Aside from these comments about content, I would have to agree with those earlier comments that this is an extremely difficult read and could have benefitted from a lot better editing.
Also, I wonder who the target audience is. Maybe if this was made clearer, there would be less negaitve comments.
I am sorry to have to write a review like this, because I like and highly recommend Dan John's "don't let go" and "mass made simple". In my view, though, if you own those, you don't need this.

The missing link for me.
By Amazon Customer
I know it sounds like hyperbole but this book gave me my life back. I was stalled in pursuit of my goals. If I pushed "hard enough" I would not be able to perform in life at 100%. I was seriously considering giving up strength training all together, reasoning that it was a lesser goal and if it affected my business and family it wasn't worth it. Enter Easy Strength. I started following the recommendations and immediately felt that I could live again. No irritability, no fatigue, no debilitating soreness. I had low expectations. I figured even if I just maintained my strength that'd be okay. After all I was only training 2 or 3 times a week for about 45 minutes. To my surprise and delight my strength soared! I have been making gains like a newb! I mean I've set several non-max PRs (read the book) in the first 2 months. And it has been so....well....EASY!

If you are an athlete or a coach Ithink you MUST read this. If you are a strength enthusiast, you must also. If strenght is your sport I.e. if you are a competitive strength athlete you will learn a lot and get a new perspective.

The book is not a "routine" where you "do this and don't ask question". This book is a philosophy based on science and experience that you use to design a program that meets YOUR goals. If you like to design your own programs, this book will give you guidelines to stay within.

Pavel gets 4 stars and Dan John gets 6. They average out to 5. Pavel like to throw out too much teaser information for his other works. I am fine with him marketing like crazy! BUT he withholds critical information that is relevant to the text in your hands. This isn't right. He puts in his "10 commandments" to do "Fast and loose" drills which he gives no slightest instruction on. A quick Google search shows a book with this title for a high fee. This is beyond "marketing" and materially affects the work you purchased.

Dan John.....I wish he was my coach! Love this man. So brilliant, so humble, so practical. He really drives his points home with experience and common sense. His whole intention seems to be to help the reader. He doesn't hold back. He is also very in touch with the real barriers to our progress: human nature. He anticipates you will be challenged mentally and emotionally to veer from his teachings and his admonitions tend to steel your resolve. This is done subtly, but directly. Its magic for your motivation.

Beyond the above "softer" points. The book is entirely practical. I have come back to it several times to tweek my routine and it really has been working! I don't know how someone could not love this book. If you read it and don't learn anything then shame on you for not writing it! Buy it, read it, use it and be strong.
My highest recommendation.

My Brilliant Friend: Neapolitan Novels, Book One, by Elena Ferrante

A modern masterpiece from one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors, My Brilliant Friend is a rich, intense, and generous-hearted story about two friends, Elena and Lila. Ferrante’s inimitable style lends itself perfectly to a meticulous portrait of these two women that is also the story of a nation and a touching meditation on the nature of friendship.

The story begins in the 1950s, in a poor but vibrant neighborhood on the outskirts of Naples. Growing up on these tough streets the two girls learn to rely on each other ahead of anyone or anything else. As they grow, as their paths repeatedly diverge and converge, Elena and Lila remain best friends whose respective destinies are reflected and refracted in the other. They are likewise the embodiments of a nation undergoing momentous change. Through the lives of these two women, Ferrante tells the story of a neighborhood, a city, and a country as it is transformed in ways that, in turn, also transform the relationship between her protagonists, the unforgettable Elena and Lila.

Ferrante is the author of three previous works of critically acclaimed fiction: The Days of Abandonment, Troubling Love, and The Lost Daughter. She has given her readers a masterfully plotted page-turner, abundant and generous in its narrative details and characterizations, that is also a stylish work of literary fiction destined to delight her many fans and win new readers to her fiction.

Praise for Elena Ferrante andThe Neapolitan Novels

The United States

“One of the more nuanced portraits of feminine friendship in recent memory.” —Megan O’Grady,Vogue

“Amazing! My Brilliant Friendtook my breath away. If I were president of the world I would make everyone read this book. It is so honest and right and opens up heart to so much. Reading Ferrante reminded me of that child-like excitement when you can’t look up from the page, when your eyes seem to be popping from your head, when you think: I didn’t know books could do this!” —Elizabeth Strout, author ofOlive Kitteridge

“I like the Italian writer, Elena Ferrante, a lot. I've been reading all her work and all about her.” —John Waters, actor and director

“Elena Ferrante may be the best contemporary novelist you’ve never heard of”—The Economist

“Ferrante’s freshness has nothing to do with fashion…it is imbued with the most haunting music of all, the echoes of literary history.”—The New York Times Book Review

“I am such a fan of Ferrante’s work, and have been for quite a while.” —Jennifer Gilmore, author ofThe Mothers

“The women’s fraught relationship and shifting fortunes are the life forces of the poignant book” —Publisher’s Weekly

“When I read [the Neapolitan novels] I find that I never want to stop. I feel vexed by the obstacles—my job, or acquaintances on the subway—that threaten to keep me apart from the books. I mourn separations (a year until the next one—how?). I am propelled by a ravenous will to keep going.”—Molly Fischer,The New Yorker

“[Ferrante’s Neapolitan Novels] don’t merely offer a teeming vision of working-class Naples, with its cobblers and professors, communists and mobbed-up businessmen, womanizing poets and downtrodden wives; they present one of modern fiction’s richest portraits of a friendship.”—John Powers, Fresh Air,NPR

“Elena Ferrante is one of the great novelists of our time. Her voice is passionate, her view sweeping and her gaze basilisk . . . In these bold, gorgeous, relentless novels, Ferrante traces the deep connections between the political and the domestic. This is a new version of the way we live now — one we need, one told brilliantly, by a woman.”—Roxana Robinson, The New York Times Book Review

“An intoxicatingly furious portrait of enmeshed friends Lila and Elena, Bright and passionate girls from a raucous neighborhood in world-class Naples. Ferrante writes with such aggression and unnerving psychological insight about the messy complexity of female friendship that the real world can drop away when you’re reading her.”—Entertainment Weekly

“Ferrante seasons the prose with provocative perceptions not unlike the way Proust did.”—Shelf Awareness

“It would be difficult to find a deeper portrait of women’s friendship than the one in Ferrante’s Neapolitan novels, which unfold from the fifties to the twenty-first century to tell a single story with the possessive force of an origin myth.”—Megan O’Grady,Vogue

“Ferrante’s writing is so unencumbered, so natural, and yet so lovely, brazen, and flush. The constancy of detail and the pacing that zips and skips then slows to a real-time crawl have an almost psychic effect, bringing you deeply into synchronicity with the discomforts and urgency of the characters’ emotions. Ferrante is unlike other writers—not because she’s innovative, but rather because she’s unselfconscious and brutally, diligently honest.”—Minna Proctor,Bookforum

“Ferrante can do a woman’s interior dialogue like no one else, with a ferocity that is shockingly honest, unnervingly blunt.”—Booklist

“The truest evocation of a complex and lifelong friendship between women I’ve ever read.”—Emily Gould, author ofFriendship

“Elena Ferrante is the author of several remarkable, lucid, austerely honest novels . . . My Brilliant Friend is a large, captivating, amiably peopled bildungsroman.”—James Wood,The New Yorker

“Compelling, visceral and immediate . . . a riveting examination of power . . . The Neapolitan novels are a tour de force.”—Jennifer Gilmore,The Los Angeles Times

“Those Who Leave and Those Who Staysurpasses the rapturous storytelling of the previous titles in the Neapolitan Novels.”—Publishers Weekly(starred review)

“Ferrante’s voice feels necessary. She is the Italian Alice Munro.”—Mona Simpson, author ofCasebookandAnywhere But Here

“Elena Ferrante will blow you away.”—Alice Sebold, author ofThe Lovely Bones

“The Days of Abandonmentis a powerful, heartrending novel.”—Jhumpa Lahiri, Pulitzer-prize winning author ofThe Lowland

“The Neapolitan novel cycle is an unconditional masterpiece . . . I read all the books in a state of immersion; I was totally enthralled. There was nothing else I wanted to do except follow the lives of Lila and Len to the end.”—Jhumpa Lahiri, Pulitzer-prizewinning author ofThe Lowland

“Reading Ferrante reminded me of that child-like excitement when you can’t look up from the page, when your eyes seem to be popping from your head, when you think: I didn’t know books could do this!”—Elizabeth Strout, Pulitzer-prize winning author ofThe Burgess Boys

“Elena Ferrante: the best angry woman writer ever!”—John Waters, director

“The feverish speculation about the identity of Elena Ferrante betrays an understandable failure of imagination: it seems impossible that right now somewhere someone sits in a room and draws up these books. Palatial and heartbreaking beyond measure, the Neapolitan novels seem less written than they do revealed. One simply surrenders. When the final volume appears—may that day never come!—they’re bound to be acknowledged as one of the most powerful works of art, in any medium, of our age.”—Gideon Lewis-Kraus, author ofA Sense of Direction

“Ferrante tackles girlhood and friendship with amazing force.”—Gwyneth Paltrow, actor

“Elena Ferrante’s The Story of a New Name. Book two in her Naples trilogy. Two words: Read it.”—Ann Hood, writer (from Twitter)

“Ferrante continues to imbue this growing saga with great magic.”—Booklist(starred review)

“One of Italy’s best contemporary novelists.”?—TheSeattle Times

“Ferrante’s emotional and carnal candor are so potent.”—Janet Maslin,The New York Times

“Elena Ferrante’s gutsy and compulsively readable new novel, the first of a quartet, is a terrific entry point for Americans unfamiliar with the famously reclusive writer, whose go-for-broke tales of women’s shadow selves—those ambivalent mothers and seething divorces too complex or unseemly for polite society (and most literary fiction, for that matter)—shimmer with Balzacian human detail and subtle psychological suspense . . . The Neapolitan novels offer one of the more nuanced portraits of feminine friendship in recent memory—from the make-up and break-up quarrels of young girls to the way in which we carefully define ourselves against each other as teens—Ferrante wisely balances her memoir-like emotional authenticity with a wry sociological understanding of a society on the verge of dramatic change.”—Megan O’Grady,Vogue

“My Brilliant Friend is a sweeping family-centered epic that encompasses issues of loyalty, love, and a transforming Europe. This gorgeous novel should bring a host of new readers to one of Italy’s most acclaimed authors.”—TheBarnes and Noble Review

“Ferrante draws an indelible picture of the city’s mean streets and the poverty, violence and sameness of lives lived in the same place forever . . . She is a fierce writer.”—Shelf Awareness

“Ferrante transforms the love, separation and reunion of two poor urban girls into the general tragedy of their city.”––The New York Times

“Beautifully translated by Ann Goldstein . . . Ferrante writes with a ferocious, intimate urgency that is a celebration of anger. Ferrante is terribly good with anger, a very specific sort of wrath harbored by women, who are so often not allowed to give voice to it. We are angry, a lot of the time, at the position we’re in—whether it’s as wife, daughter, mother, friend—and I can think of no other woman writing who is so swift and gorgeous in this rage, so bracingly fearless in miningfury.”—Susanna Sonnenberg, TheSan Francisco Chronicle

“Everyone should read anything with Ferrante’s name on it.”—The Boston Globe

“The through-line in all of Ferrante’s investigations, for me, is nothing less than one long, mind-and-heart-shredding howl for the history of women (not only Neapolitan women), and its implicit j’accuse . . . Ferrante’s effect, critics agree, is inarguable. ‘Intensely, violently personal’ and ‘brutal directness, familial torment’ is how James Wood ventures to categorize her—descriptions that seem mild after you’ve encountered the work.”—Joan Frank,TheSan Francisco Chronicle

“Lila, mercurial, unsparing, and, at the end of this first episode in a planned trilogy from Ferrante, seemingly capable of starting a full-scale neighborhood war, is a memorable character.”—Publishers Weekly

“An engrossing, wildly original contemporary epic about the demonic power of human (and particularly female) creativity checked by the forces of history and society.”—The Los Angeles Review of Books

“Ferrante’s own writing has no limits, is willing to take every thought forward to its most radical conclusion and backwards to its most radical birthing.”—The New Yorker

The United Kingdom

“The Story of a New Name, like its predecessor, is fiction of the very highest order.”—Independent on Sunday

“My Brilliant Friend, translated by Ann Goldstein, is stunning: an intense, forensic exploration of the friendship between Lila and the story’s narrator, Elena. Ferrante’s evocation of the working-class district of Naples where Elena and Lila first meet as two wiry eight-year-olds is cinematic in the density of its detail.”—The Times Literary Supplement

“This is a story about friendship as a mass of roiling currents—love, envy, pity, spite, dependency and Schadenfreude coiling around one another, tricky to untangle.”—Intelligent Life

“Elena Ferrante may be the best contemporary novelist you have never heard of. The Italian author has written six lavishly praised novels. But she writes under a pseudonym and will not offer herself for public consumption. Her characters likewise defy convention . . . Her prose is crystal, and her storytelling both visceral and compelling.”—The Economist

Ferrante is an expert above all at the rhythm of plotting: certain feuds and oppositions are kept simmering and in abeyance for years, so that a particular confrontation – a particular scene – can be many hundreds of pages in coming, but when it arrives seems at once shocking and inevitable.”—The Independent

Italy

“Those Who Leave and Those Who Stay evokes the vital flux of a heartbeat, of blood flowing through our veins.”––La Repubblica

“We don’t know who she is, but it doesn’t matter. Ferrante’s books are enthralling self-contained monoliths that do not seek friendship but demand silent, fervid admiration from her passionate readers . . . The thing most real in these novels is the intense, almost osmotic relationship that unites Elena and Lila, the two girls from a neighborhood in Naples who are the peerless protagonists of the Neapolitan novels.”—Famiglia Cristiana

“Today it is near impossible to find writers capable of bringing smells, tastes, feelings, and contradictory passions to their pages. Elena Ferrante, alone, seems able to do it. There is no writer better suited to composing the great Italian novel of her generation, her country, and her time than she.”—Il Manifesto

“Elena Ferrante is a very great novelist . . . In a world often held prisoner to minimalism, her writing is extremely powerful, earthy, and audacious.”—Francesca Marciano, author ofThe Other Language

“Regardless of who is behind the name Elena Ferrante, the mysterious pseudonym used by the author of the Neapolitan novels, two things are certain: she is a woman and she knows how to describe Naples like nobody else. She does so with a style that recalls an enchanted spider web with its expressive power and the wizardry with which it creates an entire world.”—Huffington Post(Italy)

“A marvel that is without limits and beyond genre.”—Il Salvagente

“Elena Ferrante is proving that literature can cure our present ills; it can cure the spirit by operating as an antidote to the nervous attempts we make to see ourselves reflected in the present-day of a country that is increasingly repellent.”—Il Mattino

“My Brilliant Friend flows from the soul like an eruption from Mount Vesuvio.”—La Repubblica

Australia

“No one has a voice quite like Ferrante’s. Her gritty, ruthlessly frank novels roar off the page with a barbed fury, like an attack that is also a defense . . . Ferrante’s fictions are fierce, unsentimental glimpses at the way a woman is constantly under threat, her identity submerged in marriage, eclipsed by motherhood, mythologised by desire. Imagine if Jane Austen got angry and you’ll have some idea of how explosive these works are.”—John Freeman,The Australian

“One of the most astounding—and mysterious—contemporary Italian novelists available in translation, Elena Ferrante unfolds the tumultuous inner lives of women in her thrillingly menacing stories of lost love, negligent mothers and unfulfilled desires.”—The Age

“Ferrante bewitches with her tiny, intricately drawn world . . . My Brilliant Friend journeys fearlessly into some of that murkier psychological territory where questions of individual identity are inextricable from circumstance and the ever-changing identities of others.”—The Melbourne Review

“The Neapolitan novels move far from contrivance, logic or respectability to ask uncomfortable questions about how we live, how we love, how we singe an existence in a deeply flawed world that expects pretty acquiescence from its women. In all their beauty, their ugliness, their devotion and deceit, these girls enchant and repulse, like life, like our very selves.”—TheSydney Morning Herald

“The best thing I’ve read this year, far and away, would be Elena Ferrante…I just think she puts most other writing at the moment in the shade. She’s marvelous. I like her so much I’m now doing something I only do when I really love the writer: I’m only allowing myself two pages a day.”—Richard Flanagan, author of Book prize finalist,The Narrow Road to the Deep North

Spain

“Elena Ferrante’s female characters are genuine works of art . . . It is clear that her novel is the child of Italian neorealism and an abiding fascination with scene.”—El Pais

A great book about friendship, but also about poverty, backwardness, and isolation.
By sumoran
This is a great book. Not everybody will enjoy it and it is definitively not a chick-lit.

While this is a book about friendship, I noticed that a lot of people with negative reviews came disappointed with that aspect of the book. This is a brilliant book about more than just friendship. It is also a powerful story about poverty, backwardness, class, and isolation (I know, favorite topics of most readers). What is brilliant about the book's treatment of these problems, is that while it is placed in a specific place and time (Naples in 1950s), it gets to the universal effects these problems create in people's lives from childhood onwards. In essence, it says a lot about poor rural areas or urban ghettoes in the US in 2014.

This is also a book about what it takes to get out of these problems and about the power of example, love, and friendship.

It is written in a direct and sometimes disturbing way. It's raw. There is no hiding or prettifying the truth.

So, if you are looking for a chick-lit, keep looking. If violence and abuse of any kind disturb you, move on. If you want something that will make you feel good at all times, do the same.

Finally, it gets better after a first quarter or so. It is worth sticking with it even if your are not excited early on.

This Novel is so Creative that it Takes the Reader's Breath Away and Makes One Hungry for the Next Installment
By Bookreporter
This portrait of camaraderie, community and a nation centers on the stories of lifelong friends Elena Greco and Lila Cerullo, two Italian women who grew up together in the same small town just outside of Naples in the years immediately following World War II. The story of their childhoods is told here, reminiscent of a nation facing drastic change. The girls, in early adolescence, are forced down vastly differing paths due to very slight differences in their families' economic status, leading one toward uncertainty while the other enjoys the unrequited benefits of higher education.

This first of a planned trilogy brings to life an old-world culture and fills readers with a passion for history and great storytelling. Elena artfully recalls her childhood, describing her earliest school days at a time when ordinary townsmen called for blunt action and despair. The neighborhood is consumed with a silent, inarticulate rage, shown toward rival families, by parents toward their offspring, and by neighborhood children toward one another. It was a common event of the age to witness a child being beaten by a family member or neighborhood kid, so no one interfered or paid much attention. Life was especially hard for young women and the poorer folks of small communities (which at that time seemed to be just about everyone).

The emphases for these families were dwindling resources, the simple ability to put food on the plate and pay the bills, and the need to provide cheap (child) labor. Women were expected to remain mute and meek always, and to further their families' needs at the expense of their pride and feelings. Family feuds happened routinely; everyone knew about them. But Lila and Elena learned as children --- largely through the power and support of friendship, and due to the positive influence of an exceptionally shrewd and motivating female teacher --- to stand up for themselves, and against all odds, face their fears and find creative solutions to problems, starting with the most immediate one of what to do about their futures.

By embracing pure intellectualism, these girls find a way to cope with their existence and to gather a glimmer of hope. The age is ripe for the Maestro of the school to exert her powers over her pupils, by pitting them against one another, recognizing good work, and challenging all to rise above circumstance and need.

This is the basis of Lila and Elena's early friendship: rivalry and competition. Lila happens to be the most gifted person in her class, and the most hated and taunted child at school. She brazenly flaunts her brilliance, and seems fierce and unafraid. Likewise, Lila seems to find in Elena the one person content and motivated enough to follow her, and the only one who can see clearly to the core of who she is.

Yet, as luck would have it, the girls' paths seem fated to diverge early on. Once the time has come to advance in school, Lila's father refuses to pay the necessary fees (either because he's unable or unwilling,) whereas Elena's father is a porter and so slightly better off. Because the Cerullos are shoemakers by trade, they've become a very despondent bunch, watching the family business slowly dwindle due to the advent of new technologies and factories. Lila's father seems content to leave her laboring and virtually imprisoned in his shoe repair shop --- a situation she despises to the core and that offers no security. Lila also feels keenly the loss of any future for herself through a legitimate education, which to her equates to the loss of free will.

So it is that, by the end of this first installment, Lila becomes a young woman suffering very bitterly for her losses and her simple inability to change her life. The book moves very quickly from her earliest attempts to self-educate alongside Elena, toward other, less certain pursuits wherein Lila hopes to change her lot by influencing others she knows. Hoping for good things to happen, she makes some desperate moves that will clearly come back to haunt her. Her best intentions become twisted in the pursuit of happiness and success, and in the process, both Lila and Elena unwittingly give up on the possibility of real love or the self-empowerment that comes from genuine devotion. Ironies abound.

MY BRILLIANT FRIEND is an extraordinarily meaningful and absorbing read. I can really think of no better praise than to simply say I loved it, though that seems inadequate commendation for such a supremely talented author. I would recommend this book freely to anyone who enjoys history of any kind or a well-written novel. The ending is entirely unconventional and unexpected, so creative that it takes the reader's breath away and makes one hungry for the next installment.

A BRILLIANT NOVEL, FIRST OF A TRILOGY
By ann kern
MY BRILLIANT FRIEND is the first entry in a trilogy which promises to be Ferrante's masterpiece. Rooted in the slums of Naples, it focuses on two hard-bodied, nervy, observant, vividly intelligent girls - best friends - as they grow into womanhood. This first installment is one of the best books about being a girl ever written. This is no pastel, dreamy girl-y book; these children are awake, canny, hungry for life. The entire trilogy will cover some fifty years in the lives of these girls as they grow into maturity, marriage and motherhood, and it promises in addition to be the story of a society and a nation.

Clear-eyed and fiercely feminist, Ferrante's writing is lucid and blessed with a laser focus on telling details. The story moves like a rocket. The English translation of the second installment is due in September 2013. I have already pre-ordered my copy.

This novel contains splendid writing by anyone's standard. There's greatness here.
