Review

"I am grateful to the authors of The Legacy of Simone de Beauvoirfor calling attention to Beauvoir's work. I agree strongly with their message: Read and re-read Beauvoir."--Off Our Backs

"This distinguished volume of essays provides an incisive review of Simone de Beauvoir's legacy, ranging expertly over the historical, philosophical and literary dimensions of a complex and controversial figure...the stature, originality, pragmatism and sheer intelligence of Beauvoir are outstandingly well brought into focus."--Richard Parish, Times Higher Education Supplement

Academic
By Loves the View
This is a collection of essays written by academics for academics. As a lay person, I would like to see each of these re-written in a more accessible form.

I did come away with two understandings. One is the place and time of SDB, how the prewar, war and post-war environment of France shaped her and how she shaped her ideas from the time. The other is the problem of the English translation of the 2nd sex.

One essay is devoted to the problems of the translation, but these problems are cited in almost every essay. I was not aware of how egregious a problem this is. The examples given show that the translator not only took poetic license with word choice, but in some instances infused his own ideas. Scholars have complained, but translation is expensive and The Second Sex continues to sell as is.

With the French original and the English translation side by side, even with my limited French, I can see how the differences have mitigated SDB's ideas for the English reading audience. The original French shows her to be WAY WAY ahead of her time.

terribly uneven, often inexpert
By A Customer
This book, like many such collections (especially those that bring together papers from a conference), is tremendously uneven in quality. There are a few good essays here--and they are by persons who have written illuminating and substantial pieces in the past. And then there are a lot of weak essays here--pieces which do not get de Beauvoir right or which attempt without success to advance certain themes that are supposed present in her work. The volume's introduction is especially flawed in this respect--as a piece of intellectual history or contextualization it is not bad (though not original either), but as a piece of philosophy it is . . . well, not philosophical. Volumes by Arp, Berghoffen, and Bauer measure up very well to this collection.

Lack of competition leads to mediocrity
By Owen W. Linzmayer
If you collect modern banknotes, you must own the Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, Volume III: Modern Issues (US$50, Krause Publications, ISBN 0-89689-502-5). The simple fact is that there is no other omnibus catalog that covers post-1960 issues in such detail. Now in its 13th edition, Volume III contains 12,000 illustrations of notes from over 200 issuing authorities, most with valuations in three different conditions. The SCWPM is our collector community's bible, and its "Pick" numbers are the lingua franca used worldwide to identify types and varieties. However, anyone who spends more than a few minutes examining the SCWPM soon discovers its many flaws.
Let me begin by stating that I realize it is a gargantuan task trying to ensure the accuracy of so much detailed data on a subject that is sometimes obscured by intentional secrecy. With 1,048 pages, it's inevitable that minor typos creep in and omissions are made. Many errors I had spotted in previous editions have been corrected, yet new ones have cropped up. But the problems I have with the SCWPM are not minor, they are systemic. According to the back cover blurb, editor George Cuhaj compiles input from "more than 80 experts around the world." This alone probably explains many of the catalog's flaws. These unpaid contributors are anonymous, and they bring different levels of dedication to the task of updating their areas of expertise. As a result, the SCWPM is often inconsistent.
For example, sometimes a note with a new date or signature combination gets a new type number, other times it warrants only a new variety letter, and other times it's just grouped together with several other dates. Australia, Switzerland, and West African States all have listings with extremely detailed varieties, while most other countries list only an issued note and specimen. Speaking of specimens, often they are listed without description or price. Does this mean they are unconfirmed or rare? And why is it that the introduction claims the variety letter "r" is used to indicate remainders, though Biafra's notes lacking serial numbers are given "b" variety letters and Cayman Islands uses "r" to indicate replacements? Rather than being systematic and predictable, the numbering scheme is arbitrary and subjective. Fortunately, renumbering has been held to an "absolute minimum" in this edition, but unexplained gaps from previous renumberings exist, as do new discoveries shoehorned into the inflexible scheme with numbers followed by capital letters to distinguish them from lower-case variety letters.
The problem with inconsistencies extends beyond the pervasive numbering scheme to the issue of signatures. If a country's note varieties are clearly distinguishable from one another based upon other attributes--such as date or overall design--I understand there is no need to publish a signature table. However, it is unforgiveable to omit same if the note descriptions make specific references to signatures either by number or name. For example, Argentina SCWPM 275-282 refer to signature titles by letters, but the accompanying table from the 12th edition has been dropped. Likewise, Belgium SCWPM 134-152 refer to signature numbers that have never been documented in any edition. Unfortunately, the signature tables which do appear don't always include the signatory's full name, title, and term of service. In fact, Bhutan's signature table lacks numbers altogether, so references are confusing, to say the least.
I'm happy to report that the list of banknote printers and their abbreviations has returned after being dropped since the 10th edition, but good luck finding it since it doesn't appear in the table of contents (hint: it's in the back of the book, sandwiched between full-page advertisements).
Though it bears a copyright of 2007 and claims to cover modern issues from "1961-present," the 13th edition fails to include many recent releases one would expect. For example, there's no mention of the new families of notes from Azerbaijan and Mozambique introduced in 2006, nor of the European Union notes bearing Jean-Claude Trichet's signature, and these have been out for years. Nonetheless, I would recommend the 13th edition if for no other reason than its black-and-white images are much clearer overall than the muddy illustrations of the previous edition. While the front and back of most notes are shown, not all notes are depicted, and the images are just big enough to aid in identification, but not to savor the details. Inexplicably, all recent editions have also included eight pages in color of randomly selected notes without any commentary or obvious purpose. This costly insert should be put to better use--highlighting new color varieties or particularly attractive new issues--or dropped entirely.
Aside from identification of note varieties, the other purpose of a catalog is to provide accurate values of notes. Here, too, the SCWPM provides questionable guidance. Many countries have not seen any valuation changes whatsoever over the course of several editions. This is simply impossible given the fact that all values are expressed in US dollars, and this currency has experienced a significant drop in exchange rates across the board over the past few years. For example, the high-denomination Haitian notes printed on Tyvek remain listed at relatively accessible prices, despite the fact that I have never seen these rarities offered for sale at any price. Even in those countries which have been updated, the new valuations are unreliable. For example, Romania's notes dated 2005 are all still priced below face value, though not as severely as in the previous edition. On the other hand, the prices of common recent issue Australian notes have spiked beyond reason. And some countries--such as France, Italy, and Qatar--have some VG and VF notes priced at face, despite being demonetized.
If you collect the entire world, the SCWPM is the only game in town, and is a necessary reference well worth the price, even in light of its shortcomings. But if you focus on particular countries or regions, you'll want specialized catalogs instead.

This review first appeared in print in the International Bank Note Society (IBNS) Journal 46.3.

Another poor attempt
By Chris Twining
Well yet another year passes and Krause gives us another inferior catalog. Inaccurate prices, incorrect pictures, notes two and three years old still not in the catlog. Since this is the only real catalog we can use for our hobby it has to do but i think that as hobbyists we need to let Krause know they need to take this book more serious and put a little more time, effort and professionalism into it. I know in years past I as well as many other hobbyists have sent Krause email after email with new pictures, errors in the catalog only to see the next catalog with out the changes. So it seems to me they do not take the us or our hobby very serious. It would be very nice to see another publisher get into the race and perhaps come out with the type of catalog we hobbyists deserve.

Getting Better, But Not There Yet
By Wallace J. Myers
Having been a major collector of banknotes for 40+ years, I find the SCWPM series of banknote catalogs invaluable, but far from complete or accurate. This volume has improved graphics and updated pricing compared to the previous edition. The numbering system is chaotic, pictures misplaced, signature charts missing or incomplete, latest issues missing, etc. Mr. Cuhaj needs some help.

Good book but didn't expect the abrupt ending
By Rayden
This book is actually quite interesting and engaging and I was thoroughly enjoying reading it till it came to the last chapter. I actually didn't realize this was the first of other parts yet to come and the book just ends abruptly with half a page of what to expect in the next book coming soon. I am not a regular reader and buy very few books each year and hence I don't know if this is the norm nowadays but it did leave me kind of disappointed. If I just knew this book was not going to end then I would have enjoyed the ending more and would look forward to the next instalment.

Overall though a good book and like I mentioned above, interesting and engaging. Few grammatical errors though that were surprising as they were easy to spot but not a deal breaker.

Loved it, Fans of the Mortal Instruments will LOVE this. I did. A Must Read
By Michelle's Paranormal Vault
Angelfire (Dark Angel #1)Review

Wow, this was an amazing book. I really got into it, and could see the world through Alyx's eyes. I will admit a few parts did have me confused, as in I was not sure on the whole wings part, like if they only show when she is in her own realm, and not when on the Earth plane? As it has her still flying, but never mentions the wings. I assume she has them, as the cover shows them. But other than that, I had no problems with this story at all.

I am anxious for the next book, AngelStone (Dark Angel #2)

I was able to connect really well with the main character Alyx, she is strong minded, and fierce, which I love to see in a female character.
I was not sure of Isreal at first, but he grew on me, but will say, I really like Jordan, he seems to care what happens to Alyx, and think there will be more to that in the future books.

Here is a cute part where Alyx first meet the mortal she is connected too, I thought it was funny:

"You're being here is no coincidence, is it?" His eyes narrow. "What are you?"
"What a silly question," Alyx says, trying not to let her panic show. "I'm a mortal just like you."
He grins. Alyx feels like an animal that has just been caught in a trap.
"Firstly," he says, "a real mortal would never call herself a `mortal'. And secondly, real mortals don't come falling out of the sky to land delicately on the ground. No, real mortals break bones doing things like that," he says this last sentence in a mock hush as if he was revealing some great secret. "Just keep that in mind when you try to pass yourself off as one of us next time."
Alyx's breath sticks in her throat, a strangled sort of cry.
But it only seems to amuse him further. "Yes, I saw you drop down to the ground before you knifed that thing. Scaring the living hell out of me I might add." He glances up at the buildings that loom over them. "What is that, five storys that you just jumped from? Neat little trick. No you obviously aren't human and you don't look like one of them. So the question is... what are you?"
"It's dark. You shouldn't have seen that."
"My night vision is fantastic." He shrugs as if in apology. "Okay. Maybe `what are you?' is too personal a question to ask so soon after we just started our friendship?"

Here is a little of a steamy part for you, much later on in the book:

Alyx traces her fingers across his top lip and presses her mouth to it, soft like the first drops of spring rain, her thumb trapped between the corners of their mouths. A rush fills her head. He gasps. Or does she? She isn't sure.
She pulls back to look at him. The way he is looking at her is... like he is seeing the stars for the first time.
"Alyx..."
She kisses him again, cutting him off. The world around them dissolves like sandcastles until there are just his lips and his hands.

Also this part with some steam:

Alyx traces his collarbones with her fingers.
"I am sure. I want you. And. I want you to have me. All of me."
Israel nods. He kisses her again before pulling away. He slips his fingers under her shirt finding her skin. She lifts up her arms. He draws her shirt up off her, his hands dragging along her sides.
Alyx can't meet his gaze. It is too much. She lowers her eyes as Israel drops her shirt. She can feel him staring at her. She moves to cross her arms over herself but he catches her hands.
"You have no reason to hide," he says. He leans down to kiss her bare shoulder then runs his lips along her neck up to her ear. "You are so... painfully beautiful."

Yeah, this book is great. It has it all, you have some great steamy parts, great exciting story with many twist you won't see coming. I was shocked at one of them. I sure can't wait for the next book.

I highly recommend this book, it's a great Paranormal romance, its YA, but with clean steamy parts that will satisfy those that love some swoon parts. It has the suspense and action too. Written very well too.

5 out of 5 stars for sure. A Must read!

Angelfire is a truly good book, written by a talented author
By Amazon Customer
Angelfire is a truly good book by a very talented Author.

I was offered this book for review and I am so glad I have read it and fully intend to buy the rest of this series to follow Alyx, Isreal and the others on their journey. Also loving the angsty romance budding and hope there is more angst in the future.

Alyx is a Lightwarrior, not particulary gifted but an exceptional fighter. She has a troubled past, is stubborn and kicks ass more often than not. Still, its nice to see her flaws and weaknesses. Though Alyx has a very strong 'voice' throughout Angelfire, she can be indecisive and too trusting.

Alyx has been having visions of a man who is killing Darkened (demon spirits possessing human bodies) and through this link she develops a bond, called the Guardian-Bond, a rare thing to happen and with that comes emotions and feelings she doesnt understand. The night she feels him in danger and flies to rescue him marks the night that everything in Alyx's world is turned upside down. Those she has trusted all her life have lied to her, the teachings her Leaders have taught her have been fabricated and beneath it all is an evil plot and betrayers around every corner and Alyx is at the very centre of it. The man, Israel, she is Guardian-Bonded with is entwined with her destiny completely.

I love Alyx. She is the girl I would want to be best friends with, I would trust her with my life. She is strong and brave and fights to do what feels right. Hanna Peach has developed her so well, this delicate little warrior who is beautiful and stands tall in the middle of chaos, who is loyal and passionate about every decision she makes, who inspires others around her to be better. Israel, the man bonded to her, though a bit frustrating, is a wonderful character and he kind of reminded me of Disney's Aladdin (I am not sure why) but he lives on the streets, fends for himself, steals food to live and, having trained in Parkour, can jump from building to building with little effort. the development of his and Alyx's relationship is refreshing. There is no insta-love, but time to understand each other, a time to let feelings grow between them.

What I really enjoyed about the book were the magical elements, the Bloodink tattoos which contain magic, and the descriptions used to help the reader visualise them as they were being used. They were unique and beautifully written.

I did worry whether I would like Angelfire for the first 10% as it is a little slow to start and many names to keep track of, but as the story progresses the reader is sucked in to a whirwind of betrayal, lies and evil plans. The ending was a little abrupt, but it definately makes me want to get book 2 and I cant wait to read it.

Photos to small to see in eBook
By Pumbaa
I purchased a Kindle eVersion of this book. I lasted maybe 15 minutes trying to read it and look at the photos. Words are useless without decent photos. The included B&W photos were literally thumbnail size making next to impossible to see what position the hands were in. They say a picture is worth a thousand words, well the pictures here were not worth anything sad to say.

I do not understand why authors are so hesitant to use larger photos in their eBooks. The advantage of ebooks is unlimited page counts. Sure you have to be aware of the total size of the book for downloading, but with folks getting videos online that are over 100 megs, a 5-7 meg ebook with great photos would be worth gold!

As a trainer for the US Army, I also do technical documentation for a living. Part of my deliverable is to provide electronic versions of all documentation, this includes step by step how too manuals. My main focus is making sure the images are clear, large enough that the details can be seen and well laid out.

I really wanted to like this book, but you cannot learn just from words.

This little primer is great. The black and white photos are clear and the instructions are accurate. I was really impressed that the second and third form was included with the dummy form. Great job. Order this and you won't regret it.

This Is Gonna Hurt: The Life of a Mixed Martial Arts Champion, by Tito Ortiz

He's the ultimate showman in the world's greatest spectator sport -- a controversial, charismatic figure who has dominated Ultimate Fighting for more than ten years as one of its most exciting and skillful stars.

But for Tito Ortiz, life very nearly took a different path. Growing up in Huntington Beach, California, Ortiz spent part of his childhood living in motels and in the backs of other people's houses, as his heroin-addicted parents were forced to leave one apartment after another. By the time he was in sixth grade, he had dabbled in almost every drug available, and his early youth involved time in juvenile detention centers, a string of petty crimes, and a stint in a local gang. Then, in high school, Tito discovered wrestling -- the perfect match for this tough, streetwise, ambitious kid.

Tito made his mixed martial arts debut at UFC 13 in 1997, winning his first fight in twenty-two seconds. In 2000, he was chosen as a light heavyweight contender in UFC 25 and took the belt, successfully defending it five times in the following three years.

Tito Ortiz pulls no punches as he recounts his journey from Huntington Beach Bad Boy to UFC superstardom -- his difficult upbringing, his first marriage and struggles with fidelity, his battles with the UFC, his career highs and lows, and his current happy relationship with former porn star Jenna Jameson. An inspirational story of beating the odds, and an incredible glimpse into just what it takes to win in the world's most brutal arena, This Is Gonna Hurt is raw, frank, funny, and as fearless as its subject.

PROLOGUE
Gimme Some Truth

When I was a kid I had lots of dreams.

I was nine years old and running with some friends who used to sniff glue all the time. In hindsight, it was a dumb thing to do, but back in the day, that's what kids did and I was right there with them when they did it. When I would sniff glue, I would get real high and hallucinate. I would hallucinate that people were all around me, taking my picture and saying, "Tito, look this way! Look this way!" I would look up and see my name on a marquee. In big letters it said: TITO ORTIZ. I had dreams. I had lots of dreams about growing up and being famous. I didn't really know what it meant to be a star when I was nine years old, but just thinking about it made me feel real good at a time when my life was shit.

I remember realizing years later, long after I stopped sniffing glue, got a lot smarter, and began taking the idea of being an Ultimate Fighter seriously, that the dreams had become a reality.

I was defending my Ultimate Fighting Championship belt against Elvis Sinosic in a packed arena in New Jersey. I had defended my title several times over the years, and once I became the top dog on the mixed martial arts scene, I brought fans down on both sides of Tito Ortiz.

Some people hated me and booed me whenever I fought. Some people loved me and cheered. There was no middle ground. But the main thing was that people knew me as the champion. It was my hand that was inevitably raised in victory and it was my opponent's body that usually ended up on the floor at my feet.

I have a high opinion of myself. Call it ego, cockiness, whatever the hell you want. But the reality is that I am the best of the best in a very brutal sport.

At the Sinosic fight, the cheers easily outnumbered the boos as I walked down the stage and into the caged-in Octagon. Flames from my pre-fight entrance shot up toward the ceiling. That night my entrance music was "Ortiz Anthem" by Fieldy's Dreams from the Rock N Roll Gangster album, and it was bumping. I entered carrying my trademark American and Mexican flags, the symbols of pride in my mixed heritage. Thousands of people were screaming my name. The lights went out. I was all caught up in the electricity of the moment.

And I started crying.

I had gone from being this little punk kid, whose parents were heroin addicts and whose mother was seeing men for money, to being here at center stage. All I could think of at that moment was that all these people were here for me. It touched me. I had made it.

I had lots of dreams when I was a kid -- a kid whose future looked like a road map of addiction, prison, or death. Now, barely in my mid-twenties, I was living the best possible dream.

Success.

It's been a few years since then -- a lot of fights, a lot of ups and downs. I've made it to age thirty-two. I'm sitting in my home in Huntington Beach, California, getting ready to tell the stories, good and bad, that have made up my life. Writing this book is like therapy for me. And I'll be honest with you, I feel more than a little bit of anxiety at the idea of opening up my life to countless strangers.

People are going to feel things when they read this book. People who thought they knew everything there was to know about me, the people I consider close friends, are going to learn things that they didn't know before. By the time you finish this book, you are going to know everything there is to know about me.

And maybe more than you want to know.

I'm not afraid to say these things, to let people know where I really came from and how I got here. All the material stuff -- the cars, the houses, the money -- yeah, I have all that and I've worked real hard to get those things. But that's the superficial shit. What's important is to explain how I got to this point...and to clear up all the misconceptions.

This book is going to let people know who Tito Ortiz really is.

To the people who pay good money to watch me fight and who read the stories in magazines and on the Internet, I'm known as the big, strong, and, yes, cocky fighter who kicks people's asses for money. The Huntington Beach Bad Boy, a larger-than-life professional hit man who bloodies people and breaks bones.

But for me it really isn't about the fighting. Because I'm not really a fighter. I'm an Aquarius -- an Aquarius to a T. I'm a soft-spoken, cool guy with all my friends. Before just about every fight I've ever had, I've cried. A lot of times I've even thrown up. But that was just the fear leaving me.

When it's fight time, I flip the switch on and there's this character that comes out of me that's not me. I have an out-of-body experience when I fight. I see myself fight from a place outside the ring. It sounds like some kind of fantasy. But make no mistake, when I fight it's a brutal reality.

Months and months of training go into that fifteen minutes in the cage. When I'm in the Octagon and I'm repeatedly punching a guy in the face, there are no pulled punches, no screwups, and no thrown matches. At that moment, I'm doing everything in my power to break down my opponent and destroy him.

But then it's over and I go back to being the guy I've always been. I'll go out and party. I'll drink and, although I don't do it much anymore, I might smoke a joint. I'll hang out with my friends and spend some time with my woman. In other words, when the fight's over, I go back to being Tito Ortiz. Regular guy.

This book is not intended to make me out to be some kind of saint or role model. I couldn't be either if I tried. Because I'm flawed. I'm imperfect. I've made mistakes. Lots of them.

By the time I reached the sixth grade, I had done just about every drug there was to do except heroin. I would never do heroin because I saw how it had destroyed my parents' lives and I didn't want to go down that road. But pot? Acid? Mushrooms? Sure, I did it all. Especially when I wasn't drinking. I was a drug dealer for a time, selling marijuana, cocaine, and methamphetamine in order to survive.

I was a tough, streetwise kid who ran with a gang called F Troop, and we did a lot of bad shit. I did two sentences in juvenile detention centers. I almost died twice. And in one of those instances someone I cared deeply about nearly died.

I've been unfaithful too many times to count. Affairs meant nothing to me but momentary sexual gratification. That people were getting hurt in the process meant nothing to me. After all, I was Tito Ortiz, a big kid playing in an adult sandbox and trying to overcome the lack of attention and the abandonment that had haunted me since the day I was born.

The fact that my parents were drug addicts is the one thing that haunts me the most. It hurt, but it also changed my life. If they had not been drug addicts, I might have had a luxurious life. If they had not been drug addicts, what you're about to read might never have happened.

My life has been the worst and it's also been the best.

I've had the love of a good woman named Kristin, who remains an important part of my life as the mother of my son Jacob even though we are no longer together. She is the daily recipient of all the love and respect I can give her. I am in a committed relationship with a wonderful woman named Jenna, whose love and devotion knows no limits. I have made peace with my mother. Sadly, my father and I remain apart, but I have good friends. I am truly blessed.

And yes, there are people out there who hate my guts. They've said horrible things about me. They've said vile things about the people I care for, which really bothers me. But at the end of the day, I don't really have time for the haters.

Being a role model is definitely out of the question for me. The best I can hope for in writing this book is to be an inspiration.

I think I've got the qualifications for that because I've gone through the best and the worst. I was planning to be a teacher when I finished college. I wanted to take kids who were exactly like me and pull them out of the streets and the gangs and away from parents who were drug addicts and give them some idea of a better life. Being a world-class fighter and someone in the public eye has given me the opportunity to make a difference in a lot of kids' lives.

It's impossible to reach them all. Some have slipped through the cracks -- like my childhood friend Nacho, who is currently serving twenty-five to life for a crime I was nearly involved in but, because I didn't want to miss wrestling practice, chose not to do. That day I was awfully damned lucky. Or maybe God was just looking out for me.

I'm getting ready to tell the stories that, for better or worse, have made me the person I am today. And I'll have some help.

Memories are often an elusive thing. Perspectives and impressions are like shifts in the wind. A lot of the important moments in my journey came to pass before I was even born. A lot of important moments were lost to me through years of alienation and a refusal to confront my demons. So at points in my story, the three important women in my life, my mother, Joyce Robles, my ex-wife, Kristin Ortiz, and the love of my life, Jenna Jameson, will fill in the blanks and help paint a complete picture.

Because, in a sense, this is their story as well as mine.

I'm secure. I'm happy. I sleep well at night and I work real hard for my family and the people I love. Those are the things that make Tito Ortiz tick.

I've had a lot of people tell me that I'm living in hell, so I'm surely going to heaven when I die. I'll leave that decision in the hands of God.

Because I know I've done my job as a man on this earth. Copyright 2008 by Tito Ortiz

Too Short
By CreateEnergy
This book was an interesting read and pretty much what I expected from the flamboyant Tito Ortiz. Tito does pretty much a linear narative from his early childhood with some background on his parents on to his time in a gang during Junior High and finally his wrestling days in High School/College until his first matches in the early UFC.

Along the way, there are short passages from his mom, ex-wife, and Jenna Jameson throughout the book. Their input ranges from mildly insightful to redundant(basically restating what Tito had just said). Tito focuses heavily on his relationships with his parents, ex-wife, and Jenna.

While that's fine, I just wished that he put more attention to his fighting career and training. He tends to glance through his preperations for a fight and doesn't really describe how he feels before a fight. The font used for this book is large and there are only 202 pages so this is a quick read. While I enjoyed reading the book I just wished there was more to it.

Not the best read in the world....
By William Pulgarin
At long last, Ortiz was able to outdo Chuck Liddell at something. That something was writing a better book. At the least, Ortiz's book went to a draw with Liddell's book.

Ortiz's life has been full of ups and downs, and he is straightforward about his struggles with women, drugs, and fame. A lot of times when people write their story, they tend to paint themselves in a better, more agreeable light. But Ortiz doesn't try to do this. He is revealing and honest. He doesn't hold anything back.

Interesting, informative, and insightful, this book delivers a KO to most of the other MMA biographies that have been coming out in this past year. I didn't really like the commentary of Jenna Jameson and Ortiz's mother. Their commentary detracts from the flow of the book. The format of the book was poorly thought out.

Did not live up to my hopes
By Amazon Customer
Whenever I read a memoir I hope to be better able to understand the person at the end. Some recent books I have read, including Chris Jehrico and Randy Couture really give you an insight into the person and makes you feel like you know them. Tito's book, while a very good read, seems to always be on the surface and never really lets you feel like you know Tito any better than you knew him before. It was surprising since in with his Ultimate Fighter coaching stint he seemed like he could really open up. Not so in this book. Tito could literally write another autobigraphy and you would not be surprised it sounded different from this one.
