The Anatomy of Style Few art of anatomy books boast quite as much awe inspiring style and originality as this one from fantasy artist and teacher - Patrick J Jones! ***** Artist's Choice Five Star Gold Award!: ImagineFX Magazine
The Anatomy of Style! Once in a rare while, an art instruction book comes along that can be appreciated by anyone, no matter if you want to learn to draw or not.Patrick Jones'sfresh, innovative approach breaks the human body down into shapes and rhythms that can easily be committed to memory, demystifying the art of figure drawing in the process. Much more than a book on anatomy, this guide explains how to use knowledge of the human form to produce drawings with style and grace, using pastel, pencil, and charcoal techniques and tools. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!Bud's Artbooks
"An amazing collection of work in the tradition and quite as powerful as the best of Boris, Frazetta, and I would add Howard Pyle. I can't say enough here—his work reminds me at times of Jose Segrelles, one of the very finest fantasy illustrators ever. Don't miss this!!" —Bud Plant on Sci-Fi & Fantasy Oil Painting Techniques

Informative and insightful book on human figure drawing
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:67d550fc07154fbc174f7d002c728293]]The Anatomy of Style by Patrick J Jones is a book for beginners learning to draw the human figure. This book is a collection of tips and techniques that he wished he had learned years ago. The content comes from his 15 years of experience as an artist and also from the art classes he teaches.
This 160-page paperback has several chapters.
The first chapter talks about the foundation of understanding anatomy. Here it has a lot of pointers in regards to specific landmarks on the human figure to look out for when you're drawing. There are tips to help you understand the form and structure, for the whole human figure and also in detail for each feature of the head.
The other chapters covers poses and gestures, such as the use of contrapposto (aka counterpoise), how to make your figures more lively and less rigid, how to tackle life figure drawings with detail or with limited time, finding your own style, and using what you've learned to draw from imagination.
There are many wonderful illustrated examples with notes, several step by step drawings with explanation. I find the instructions very insightful and the book definitely warrant repeated readings.
When I went through the book, I was reminded of other anatomy books, such as Drawing the Living Figure, Figure Drawing: Design and Invention, Force: Dynamic Life Drawing for Animators, Anatomy for Artists: A New Approach to Discovering, Learning and Remembering the Body and some others. If you're an experienced artist, then perhaps you'll already know much of what's taught because the target audience for this book is for beginners. As a standalone book, the subject coverage is great.
Overall, it's a very informative and helpful book on human figure drawing. Highly recommended.

Good for the beginner
By Alessandro A.
As an intermediate artist with strong knowledge of human anatomy, this book didn't help at all. Jones' process of teaching isn't anything I've found in my other drawing books. He mostly just shows completed figure drawings (be it long or short) and points to areas he thinks show significance. I didn't really like his "Structure + Gesture = Style" mindset as he placed more emphasis on structure than he did gesture. Gesture, in my opinion, is more important than structure, ESPECIALLY if you're beginning to learn figure drawing. I recommend Michael Mattesi's "FORCE" for the foundation of your figures instead.
On the other hand, if you're a beginning artist (and I mean at the very beginning!) this book will help. And if you like Jones' art and want to know how he works, you'll also like this book.

... the write ways of teaching myself to be the best I could be
By john ogden
When I decided to train to become a full time professional artist I wanted to find the right people and the write ways of teaching myself to be the best I could be. At the start one of the things I asked a number of mentors was "what book do you recommend to learn anatomy" One or two came to mind but there was always the reply that books cant teach you everything and of course that's true.... and in a prefect world we would all have an expert standing beside us when we draw or paint giving us their wisdom.
But for all of us I dare say that that option is not possible, so we need books to teach us what we cannot find elsewhere.
Well I have been a professional artist selling my work in many countries for the past 14 years and yes I have had the same question asked to me by many students and for me Patrick's latest book 'The Anatomy of Style' coupled with his first book 'Oil Painting Techniques' are my go to choices.
His books are well thought out and I find them not only easy to understand but also give me an incite into the man himself and his way of thinking.
As far as I am concerned, I am never too old to try something new and see a fresh way of doing things and I have learnt so much from just reading them and I am sure that many more people will soon enjoy learning Patrick's techniques and see what an amazing way of thinking about art it is.
I thoroughly recommend Anatomy of Style and both of Patrick's books are now among my books on my shelves in my working studio
